What Is an MOT?

The MOT scheme is a compulsory road safety measure designed to ensure all vehicle are road safe once 3 years old. Remember- the test certificate relates only to the condition of the testable items at the time of the test and should not be regarded as evidence of their condition at any other time; nor should it be accepted as evidence of the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.


How often do I need an MOT?

You need to MOT your vehicle least once a year by an authorised MOT test station as this is a requirement of the law.*


When is My Car Eligible for its First MOT?

Only once it is three years old.*


How much does an MOT cost?

There are maximum fees which can be charged for MOT tests. These fees are determined by the Government Agency - VOSA. For a list of prices please click here.


What Happens if My Vehicle Fails the MOT Test?
Should the vehicle fail the MOT, you will be issued with a VT3O Certificate informing you of the items which have causing the failure of the MOT test. You should is required for a pass to be issued. In certain cases expert or special services may be required regarding emissions or welding.

There is no set time limit before a retest and it is at the discretion of the individual. Remember - a car that does not have as current MOT Certificate is not allowed to be used on the road except when going for repairs for an MOT test, or to a prearranged MOT test. If you have time left on your MOT at the point it fails your additional time becomes invalid until the MOT re test has been done.


What happens if I’m late getting my MOT?

If your MOT has run out you are only allowed to drive the vehicle to an MOT test station.


How long does a MOT test take?

An MOT test takes approximately 45 minutes.


Am I notified by the VOSA when my MOT test date is due?

Unlike road tax, where you receive a reminder, the mot test is your responsibility.


Can I take my car before the expiry date of my current MOT certificate?

Yes, but to preserve the anninversary date of your MOT renewal, you can only get the MOT test upto 30 days prior to the expiry date.


I have lost my MOT certificate, what can I do?

You can get a duplicate MOT certificate from us. The fee is £10.00.

How do I check my MOT status?

You can click here to visit VOSA to check the status of your MOT. You’ll need the vehicle registration mark and either the MOT test number (you can get this from the VT20 test certificate or the VT30 refusal certificate) or the document reference number from the V5C registration certificate (logbook) if you don’t have the MOT test number.
